A wise man living under the rule of fools may suffer if he does not adapt to the custom and whim of his leaders.  Yet, such a condition can be a blessing if the sage can remain amiable towards his political betters, and work under the shade of their ignorance.  It is exceedingly rare for men of great intellect to pursue the powers of civil office, for who in their right mind would take so much responsibility with so little compensation?  Under a regime of pleasant idiots, wise men bear great influence without attracting the attention of the plebes, providing a degree of safety for those who espouse new and controversial ideas.
